When I held an SLR for the first time at the age of 13 and smelled the wonderful aroma of lens cleaning solution, I was mesmerized by the mechanics of the camera and the beauty it could capture. Ever since those early magical times with a Minolta XG-1, I have had a desire to make images. Since then, I have shot underwater, on mountain summits, political events, city streets, dining rooms, law firms and more. Lately, I have found myself drawn to older film cameras and classic formats like 4x5, 6x7, and the square 6x6. Also, I have found that a box made of foam core and black tape or a 1950's Speed Graphic with a pinhole stuck on the front of it can yield wonderful images.
I have been fortunate to participate in these exhibitions and publications:
May 2011 - Lumina, the literary journal of Sarah Lawrence College Graduate Program.
April 2011 - LitnImage online literary journal.
September 2010 - Mpls Photo Center, Black & White Juried Show.
March 2009 - LUMP (League of Upper Midwestern Photographers) Group Show at the Edina Art Center.
May 2007 - International Pinhole Photography Exhibition, Andre Malraux Cultural Centre, Le Bourget, France.
Other photographs have been published in regional magazines such as Minnesota Law & Politics, Lake Home Living and websites including political campaigns, musicians, law firms, retail stores, commercial and residential real estate and other corporate sites. One of my photographs was recently included in a new pinhole photography how-to book called The Pinhole Camera. There is more info and a nice interview here. There is also some more candid content on my blog.
Some of my finished images are from digital captures, others are from film that has been scanned and printed. I also make traditional black and white, silver gelatin prints in a darkroom. There is still such a magic in a wet-darkroom print and it’s always a combination of hard work and artistic joy to make them.
